Counterfeits: Part 3 – Developing a Prayer Strategy Against Counterfeit Spirits

In Part 1, we learned how to recognize counterfeit spirits and ministers. In Part 2, we explored nine disciplines that sharpen your discernment. This final part of the series focuses on something very practical: how to pray when you encounter counterfeit influence.

It is easy to respond with anger, gossip, or avoidance when a leader falls or when something feels “off.” But God invites us into a higher response—that of a watchful intercessor who prays from a place of truth and compassion.

Review: What Is a Counterfeit Spirit?

A counterfeit spirit imitates the genuine work of God but is driven by deception, pride, idolatry, and selfish ambition. We are in the “last of the last days,” a time Scripture says will be marked by false teachers and prophets (2 Timothy 3; Matthew 24).

Counterfeit leaders often:

  • Lack godly fruit and character.

  • Glorify themselves more than God.

  • Operate from pride, idolatry, and ambition rather than humility and obedience.

Second Corinthians 4:4 describes Satan as the “god of this world,” and he often uses influence, platforms, and algorithms to amplify deceptive voices. His goal is that when such leaders fall, many immature believers fall away with them.

Deception works by seducing spirits and through delusions that make things “look right,” gradually dulling believers’ trust in the Holy Spirit and their own God-given discernment. Prolonged, unrepentant sin can lead to a reprobate mind—persistently resisting God’s conviction (Romans 1:28).

A Compassion-Driven Prayer Strategy

The first line of defense against counterfeit spirits is prayer. Many deceptive leaders are operating from deep brokenness, trauma, and unhealed wounds. While this does not excuse sin, it should shape how we pray.

1. Pray for Repentance and Salvation

Start by praying for genuine repentance.

  • Ask God to grant them a change of heart and mind that leads to a change of life (2 Timothy 2:25).

  • If their pattern of habitual sin suggests they may not truly know Jesus, pray for their salvation as well (Romans 10:9–10).

We are not praying for their destruction, but for their restoration.

2. Pray for True Encounters with God

Ask the Lord to interrupt them with undeniable encounters—through dreams, visions, or dramatic moments in His presence. As with Saul/Paul’s encounter in Acts 9, one moment with Jesus can radically shift a life.

Pray that they would:

  • See clearly the danger and emptiness of their current path. They become self-aware of their lifestyle. They realize they are negatively affecting their eternal rewards.

  • Experience both the love and the fear of the Lord in a way that humbles pride and awakens hunger for truth.

3. Pray for Followers’ Eyes to Be Opened

Counterfeit influence always affects more than one person.

Pray for those who follow or sit under that ministry or organization:

  • That spiritual “scales” would fall from their eyes (Acts 9:18).

  • That God would stir a fresh hunger for His Word and authentic, holy leadership.

  • That He would gently reposition them into safe, Christ-centered communities if needed.

  • That the spirit of delusion be broken off of them.

4. Confront the Spirit of Idolatry in Prayer

Much counterfeit ministry is fueled by idolatry—leaders, brands, or movements occupying a place in people’s hearts that belongs only to God.

In prayer, deliberately come against this spirit. Ask God to:

  • Tear down every idol.

  • Expose any unhealthy, blind allegiance to leaders.

  • Restore pure devotion to Jesus alone.

The Old Testament is filled with lessons from Israel’s repeated cycles of idolatry, and those patterns still show up in the church today.

When God Shifts the Prayer to Judgment

There are times when, after persistent hardness of heart and refusal to repent, the Holy Spirit may lead you to pray for righteous judgment.

This is not about asking God to “punish” someone for punishment’s sake. It is asking Him to do whatever is necessary to bring them—and those they influence—to repentance and truth, as He did with Israel when they persisted in idolatry. Judgment can bring repentance and restoration.

Pray soberly:

“Lord, let Your righteous judgments be released in whatever way will most clearly reveal truth and lead to repentance. Protect the innocent, and purify Your church.”

The Watchman Assignment

Some believers—especially those called as intercessors or in fivefold ministry—may find themselves under leadership they later recognize as counterfeit. The instinct may be to leave immediately, but in some cases, God has actually assigned them there as watchmen.

Like the watchmen in Ezekiel, these believers:

  • Stand in the gap in prayer for the leader and the flock.

  • Partner with God’s mercy, praying for repentance and protection.

  • Receive grace and anointing to remain until God releases them.

If God calls you to this kind of assignment, He will make it clear and sustain you. If you are unsure, seek wise counsel and stay sensitive to His leading.

Personal Disciplines That Protect You

Alongside this prayer strategy, your own spiritual life must remain anchored. Protection from deception includes:

  • Daily engagement with the Word of God.

  • Praying in tongues to build yourself up (Jude 20).

  • Fasting to sharpen spiritual sensitivity.

  • Learning from Israel’s history of idolatry in the Old Testament.

  • Letting the Holy Spirit lead, guide, and comfort you (John 16:13).

  • Staying connected to elders and mature believers who truly know God.

If you have not received the gift of the Holy Spirit with the Bible evidence of speaking in other tongues, seek out solid, scriptural teaching and resources. It is a spiritual lifeline for this hour.

Putting the Strategy into Practice

To begin applying this series:

  1. Revisit all three parts—recognition, disciplines, and prayer.

  2. Take an inventory of the voices, teachers, and influencers you follow.

  3. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight any areas of deception or unhealthy influence.

  4. Begin praying, by name, for leaders and followers where counterfeit spirits may be at work.

Remember, your battle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). You are not called to attack people, but to partner with God for truth, repentance, and restoration in His church.
