Counterfeits: How to Sharpen Your Discernment
In Part 1, we explored how to recognize counterfeit ministers, influencers, and spiritual activity in the last days. Knowing what is false is vital—but it is only half of the equation. To stay steady, you also need to actively cultivate spiritual discernment.
God has not called you to be fearful or suspicious. He has called you to be rooted, sober-minded, and spiritually sharp (1 Peter 5:8). This second part of the series focuses on nine key disciplines that, when practiced consistently, make deception far less likely in your life.
1. Know and Meditate on the Word of God
Discernment starts with Scripture. You cannot reliably spot a counterfeit if you do not know the genuine.
Commit to regular Bible reading and biblical meditation, not just casual reading.
Let the Word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16).
When the Word is alive in you, the Holy Spirit can quickly highlight when something violates Scripture (Acts 17:11).
2. Pray the Prayers in the Pauline Epistles
Instead of vague, religious-sounding prayers, begin praying the specific prayers Paul prayed over the early church. These are often called the “Ephesians prayers” and focus on revelation and spiritual understanding.
Examples include:
Ephesians 1:17–19
Ephesians 3:16–19
Philippians 1:9–11
Colossians 1:9–11
Pray these over yourself by name. Ask God for the mind of Christ and for your eyes and ears to be opened to His truth.
3. Pray in Tongues as a Lifestyle
Jude 20 tells us to build ourselves up in our most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues is not meant to be a rare or occasional experience.
Don’t limit praying in the Spirit to a few minutes at church.
Pray quietly under your breath throughout the day whenever you are not speaking.
The apostle Paul demonstrated this in 1 Corinthians 14:18, by saying he prayed in tongues more than them all (speaking to that church). This lifestyle of praying in tongues will change your life. It will make you more aware of the Holy Spirit’s in dwelling presence.

4. Practice a Lifestyle of Fasting
Fasting helps you live a spirit- led life. Helping you walk in the spirit and overcome the flesh (carnal nature). It makes you more sensitive to God.
Don’t confine fasting to the annual or bi-annual 21-day corporate fast with your church.
Ask the Lord for a consistent, personal fasting rhythm (for example, one or two regular days each week).
As you fast unto the Lord, your fleshly appetites quiet down and your ability to discern spiritual things increases (Matthew 6:16–18).
5. Guard Your Gates: Heart, Eyes, Ears, and Mouth
Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Luke 6:45 reminds us that “out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Guard what you allow through your eyes and ears—media, music, conversations, and social feeds.
Listen to your own words; they reveal what is truly in your heart.
If your speech becomes more compromising or carnal, it is a signal that your heart needs fresh alignment with God’s Word.
6. Pray David’s Prayer of Surrender
David’s prayer in Psalm 139:23–24 is a powerful daily posture:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.”
Regularly invite the Holy Spirit to expose any wrong motives, pride, compromise, or deception in your heart—and be willing to respond when He shows you.
7. Pursue Deliverance, Inner Healing, and Discipleship
Unhealed wounds and trauma can distort how you see and hear spiritually.
Pursue environments where biblical deliverance and inner healing are practiced in a healthy way.
Stay in ongoing discipleship, not just one-time ministry events.
As the Lord heals rejection, fear, pride, and other heart issues, your discernment becomes cleaner and more accurate.
8. Seek Wise Counsel from Mature Believers
Proverbs teaches that there is safety in a multitude of counselors. You were never meant to navigate this life, spiritual impressions, or prophetic words alone.
Submit what you believe God is saying—prophetic words, dreams, impressions—to trusted, mature believers.
Invite them to judge what you share according to Scripture and the Holy Spirit.
If you do not yet have this kind of counsel, pray specifically for God to bring those relationships into your life and be willing to step into community when He does.
9. Avoid Lukewarm and Compromising Relationships
Your inner circle affects your spiritual sensitivity. Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
When your closest relationships are lukewarm, compromising, or carnal, your tolerance for sin increases—and your ability to recognize counterfeit spirits and ways diminishes.
Ask honestly: Are my closest friends sharpening my walk with God or dulling it?
Intentionally cultivate friendships with believers who love Jesus, His Word, and His holiness.
Your relationships do not just shape your present atmosphere; they impact your eternal rewards.
Walking These Disciplines Out
These nine disciplines are not a legalistic checklist. They are relational rhythms that keep your heart aligned with God. Ask the Holy Spirit which one or two He wants you to focus on first. As you take simple, consistent steps, your discernment will grow, and counterfeit voices will become easier to recognize and resist.
In Part 3, we will walk through a practical, compassion-driven prayer strategy for responding to counterfeit spirits and deceptive leaders/influencers.
